In the economically important panaeid shrimp, members of the microorganism genus Vibrio have become a major constraint on production and trade during the past two decades. They are responsible for several diseases and mortalities of up to 100 percent, causing global losses of around US$ 3 billion. Shrimp disease prevention and control are now priority research topics.
