Addressing the Challenges of Shrimp Nutrition

In 2013, global production of farm-raised marine shrimp generated a direct revenue of almost USD 23 billion and accounted for 4.46 million MT in production. More than 2/3 of this production concentrated on the whiteleg Pacific shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Today, the bulk of farm-raised shrimp production is dependent on the supply of industrially compounded feeds. As opposed to the significant expansion in L. vannamei production, there is little documented information regarding the species nutrient requirements. This presentation will address the challenges of shrimp nutrition from the perspective of farmers, the feed industry and parallel sectors.
