Feed & Water Hygiene
Discussions on biosecurity often neglect water and feed. Yet, these are two of the major vectors for disease organisms entering the farm. Feed can be contaminated by a range of pathogenic organisms which may or may not be destroyed during the feed manufacturing process. Whilst heat treatments can be effective in sterilizing the feed, it can do nothing to prevent recontamination during the cooling and storage processes in the feed mill or during transport and storage on the farm.
Water quality varies according to acidity and alkalinity, which in turn depends on the water source as well as possible bacterial contaminations. Over time, biofilm builds up in the water pipes which can harbor unwanted pathogens.
